The 2nd Quarter Final of the UEFA Champions League to be held in Lisbon is between Germany’s RB Leipzig and Spain’s Atletico de Madrid. Both these teams defeated the finalists of last year’s Champions League Finals in the Round of 16. RB Leipzig defeated an off-form Tottenham side while Atletico Madrid defeated the holders Liverpool. It would be a battle of opposite styles on the pitch, bringing the pragmatic and defensive minded Atletico Madrid against the ultra attacking RB Leipzig team.
Players to miss out
RB Leipzig
Centre Forward Yussuf Poulsen will not be able to face Atletico due to an ankle injury. RB Leipzig will miss the services of their talisman Timo Werner who has already signed for Chelsea.
Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid will be without the services of right back Vrsaljko and winger Angel Correa due to a knee injury and Quarantine respectively. Though they aren’t guaranteed starters but Correa has been a decent option off the bench throughout the season.
Players to watch out for
RB Leipzig
Dayot Upamecano
Upamecano has been one of the best centre backs in the Bundesliga and has attracted interest from many top clubs across Europe including giants such as FC Barcelona. He is a good ball playing centre back and has performed exceptionally well. He will be key to Leipzig not conceding goals.
Marcel Sabitzer
The Austrian midfielder has scored 9 goals and provided 7 assists in the Bundesliga this season and is one of the main outlets for RB Leipzig attacks. He will have to play a pivotal role if Leipzig want to win against a stubborn Atletico side.
Atletico Madrid
Saul Niguez
Saul is a brilliant midfielder in Atletico’s ranks. He is the second top scorer for Atletico this season. In a side which plays a pragmatic style of football, he provides the creative spark. He was great against Liverpool in the previous round and he can be expected to do well in the quarter finals as well.
Jan Oblak
Jan Oblak is one of the best shot-stoppers on the planet, if not the best. He has been great all season and against a side which loves to attack, he would be called into action often. His saves will be necessary if Atletico are to qualify for the semi finals. He has conceded just 27 goals in the 38 La Liga matches he has played.
Preview
More than RB Leipzig V/S Atletico Madrid, it would be Julian Nagelsmann V/S Diego Simeone. The team which executes their match tactics better would advance. Atletico Madrid have decent European experience and pedigree while Leipzig are relative newcomers to this stage. Diego Simeone’s side should overcome the Germans but Leipzig can’t be taken for granted even if they are without their star Timo Werner.
