Manchester United: Average journey continues

Another new season, another new year where the fallen giants try to revive the good old days of glory. After a dismal 1-3 defeat to Crystal Palace on the opening day of the Premier League campaign, and a largely underwhelming performance against Brighton, where the Red Devils just narrowly scraped through to clinch the win with a 90+10th minute Bruno Fernandes penalty.

But why is this happening? Year after year, Man Utd just doesn't seem to rejuvenate. Here is our opinion of what is lacking in this Manchester United squad and how we feel some changes need to be made earnestly and tactfully.

1. SHAKY DEFENSE

Man Utd just can't find the right back line to support the attackers. Yes, last year they conceded 18 fewer goals in the league than the season before, but the defense is far from solid.

Maguire was made captain, but he's no leader. Errors, confusion, and no inspiration.  Maguire centre back partners Lindelof and Bailey are poorly inconsistent, sometimes even not looking good enough to play for a big club like Manchester United. Luke Shaw does a decent job, but is injury prone. The Smalling situation is still unknown. De Gea is not the same between the sticks, seldom blunders have become common nowadays.

Reguilon chose Spurs over Man Utd. Surprising, there seems to have been no effort in signing playes who could strengthen the defense. Upamecano would be a brilliant add-in considering how young he is. Veteran Koulibaly could be trusted for a season or two. Meanwhile, City signed two Centre backs in Ake and Dias. Much wow.

2. THE RIGHT WINGER

After a blitz of a start to his Man Utd career, Dan James has never felt like a player who could really trouble the opposition's defense. His spot as a starter was taken off him on the latter half of last seaosn by the ever improving Greenwood. But can you really expect a teenager to deliver all the time with the little experience he has after playing just a solitary season in the top flight? Sancho's not coming. 80m for Maguire is okay, but 108m for Sancho isn't. Of course. What is the board even thinking? Even if Sancho is out of their budget, aren't there any alternatives? Sabitzer from Leipzig would be amazing. Juve's Douglas Costa might be a good back up for Greenwood while sending James on loan. Even Bale ditched them to go to Tottenham. What more can you say?

3. PAUL POGBA

It's high time for this guy to sort out his shit. Yes, he has the ability, but what's the use he is not motivated? Loose body language at the centre of the back, not enough hunger to drive forward, lazy challenges at the back, absolutely morbid displays from a World Cup winner. De Beek might soon take his position if this continues.

4. FIRE OLE

There have been some great performances during his tenure. But where's the consistency? Third finish last season? That was pretty evidently due to Bruno's addition which really lifted the team. But now? There is no shape to their attacks, scoring is often limited to moments of individual brilliance. Allegri is free, Pochettino is there too. FIRE THE NORWEGIAN.

VAR: Boon or Bane?

Ever since its introduction, VAR has sparked controversies all around the globe. While it was believed before its introduction that it would reduce the human errors and provide the referees a second chance to rectify their mistakes, it now has left us pondering whether technology intervention was required in the first place.      The good point is that no foul committed can possibly go unnoticed but the disadvantages are far more with the most disturbing being it stops the flow of the game every now and then and this doesn’t augur well for the beautiful game as the frequent stoppages are disturbing both for the players and the audiences. By this time, we already know there have been a record number of penalties awarded in this season’s Premier League and credit goes to VAR for awarding them without much hesitation. For the first time ever we saw a team score after the final whistle. Yes, you heard that right. Manchester United’ s game against Brighton was completed...

EL CLASICO : PREVIEW

As Camp Nou gets ready to host the first Clasico of the season, both clubs in their own rebuilding phase will look to get one over their arch rivals. Both clubs have had rather inconsistent starts to the season, by their lofty standards. With the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, this fixture has somewhat lost its glory but the political reasons behind the rivalry will continue to fuel this fixture.  FC Barcelona have come from a nightmare season, not winning any trophy and conceding 8 against Bayern Munich. With renewed hope, under Dutch boss Ronald Koeman, they have started pretty poorly in La Liga, winning two of their four matches. Although it is very early in the season, Barcelona are languishing at tenth in the table. With all the behind the scenes drama, they have coped pretty well. Lionel Messi will be their star man as usual. Coutinho has done well on his return to the club. Griezmann hasn’t yet found his feet in Catalonia. All eyes would be on Gerrard Pique, who got a red ca...

Manchester City VS Arsenal : Preview

In recent times, not too often Arsenal have had the upper hand versus Pep’s City. Given City’s inconsistency early on in the season with their solitary win from 3 games coming against Wolves, City are not too high on confidence and have been a poor reflection of themselves from their previous seasons. The loss against Leicester was embarrassing with their defenders leaking out as many as 3 penalties and Pep’s emphasis on improving the defence continuously somewhat seems justified as City spent over 100m euros only on defenders this season.          Arsenal on the other hand have looked like a well oiled machine with all their new recruits, Arsenal and Gabriel fitting in the team in no time. Their only loss came against the defending champions, Liverpool. Arsenal will look to carry the momentum from their previous win against Sheffield United. What’s more encouraging for Arsenal is that apart from their club captain and prolific goalscorer being am...
