The Premier League, this season, has made huge strides towards being the best league in Europe. The main impact has been the signings of the clubs, who have bolstered their squad with top level players. There was a time when the Premier League was known for its physicality. Any player with a bit of technical quality would make it huge.
This change started happening after Liverpool reached the Champions League Final in 2018. In the following seasons, Premier League clubs went on to sign players who lit up other European Leagues such as Joelinton, Haller, Ndombele. Joelinton played well in the Bundesliga, while Haller tore up the Bundesliga and the Europa League with Frankfurt. Ndombele was one of Lyon’s best players. Irrespective of the fact that the three of them haven’t been as good as expected, they were big signings.
This season, Chelsea have bought in Havertz, Werner, Thiago Silva , three players with proven European pedigree. Similarly, Liverpool signed Thiago, one of the best number 6s in the world. The Manchester clubs have dipped into the market and bought in Donny Van De Beek and Ferran Torres, two players with potential and other top clubs fighting for their signature. The signings of Allan and James for Everton also shows how far the Premier League has come in attracting top quality talent.
We have seen players like Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham go abroad for more game time and to develop, something which never used to happen before. The competitiveness of the Premier League doesn’t let coaches experiment with youngsters, which has seen the likes of Foden and Brewster get very less game time. It will take a few years for Premier League clubs to dominate on a European Level, but it is coming.
