In the Messi-Ronaldo era, no one other than Luka Modric has got the chance to hold the highest individual award in football. Such has been their dominance with both sharing the award 11 times, Messi edging out Ronaldo by 1 more trophy.
While Messi last season grabbed the highest scorer trophy alongwith a whooping 21 assists, Ronaldo just fell short of Ciro Immobile in the Seria A by 5 goals. The level of performance they are delivering season after season is just insane but this season one man dominated the headlines and took his game to a whole new level, Robert Lewandowski. Not only was he the top scorer in every competition he played, but his team managed to win the historic treble for only the second time in their history and matched the record held by Barcelona of two trebles. In Bundesliga he has 34 goals from 31 outings while in the Champions League 15 goals in only 10 matches is a jaw dropping statistic. Had the matches been of two legs, he may well been on course to break the 2013-14 record held by Ronaldo of 17 goals in an UCL season. What’s more, he had 5 assists in the UCL, just wow. Lewandowski was on his own scoring goals at ease and it seemed too simple for him to find the back of the net. You name it, be it long rangers, thumping headers , weak foot shots all were goals.
While some are still not convinced of Modric getting the Ballon’dor, especially when Xavi, Iniesta, Maldini, Neuer among many other greats couldn’t get the football’s top prize, there’s no question regarding who should have won this season had the Covid-19 pandemic not played spoilsport after such a dominant performance throughout the season.
The petitions are still on to bring back the Ballon’dor, we can patiently wait for it and hope that the Polish finally gets his hands on it because Ballon’dor prizes do not come so often to players other than Messi and Ronaldo in their era.
