It's heating up in Lisbon as the UEFA Champions League approaches its finale. The topsy-turvy 2019-20 season is concluding and what a season it has been. We thought it’d be fun to look at Paris Saint Germain and FC Bayern Munchen, the teams fighting it out for the coveted prize, and create a best eleven of players from both teams. We are going with the popular 4-3-3 formation. This is about to spark some debate.
GOALKEEPER
MANUEL NEUER
With Keylor Navas not having played the semi-final due to an injury, Neuer was the obvious choice in goal. He has redeemed himself after a poor 2018 World Cup and a sub-par 2018-19 season. So the German number one is between the sticks for us.
DEFENDERS
JOSHUA KIMMICH
One of the most versatile players in the squad, Kimmich can play both at Right Back and Central Midfield. He is not very pacy but is technically very sound. He chips in with goals like the one against Barcelona. Kimmich makes the right back spot his own in our team.
THIAGO SILVA
The Paris Saint Germain captain has been a rock at the back for the French champions. He is a ball playing centre back and is underrated. The Brazilian will be looking to make history come Sunday by becoming the first PSG captain to lift the Champions League.
DAVID ALABA
David Alaba isn’t exactly a centre-back, or that’s what we thought until this season that is. Amidst a crisis of centre-backs in the Bayern setup, the Austrian has stepped up and proven his doubters wrong. This brings forth the versatility he possesses. Although he has made a few mistakes, like finding the back of his own net against Barcelona in the quarter final, but overall he has done a pretty decent job.
ALPHONSO DAVIES
If you were expecting someone else at left back then maybe you haven’t seen this Canadian roadrunner wreck havoc. His performances speak for him. He has laid down a very strong case to be the best left back in the world currently. Insane pace, pinpoint crosses and some brilliant tracking back is what makes him so special.
MIDFIELDERS
MARQUINHOS
Paris’s Brazilian central defensive midfielder has been a fixed presence in the midfield for Thomas Tuchel, who has rotated the other two midfield positions as per match requirements. He has also chipped in with important goals, such as the equaliser against Atalanta. He will be one of the most important players on the pitch come Sunday, where he will come up against a star-studded Bayern attack.
THOMAS MUELLER
The Raumdeuter picks himself in our team and we don’t think his inclusion needs any explanation. The German has been on fire throughout the season. He has kept up brilliant levels of consistency in a very long and hard season. Be it setting up the ones ahead of him or be it finding the back of the net, Mueller has been involved, stacking up insane statistics.
ANGEL DI MARIA
The Manchester United flop (yes you read that right!), is back for a Champions League final in Lisbon. The last time he played a Champions League final there, he starred for Real Madrid as they won La Decima. He was the man of the match in the semi-final as well. He starts in midfield for our team.
FORWARDS
NEYMAR
On the left wing, it was a toss-up between two of Paris’s most important players - Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Mbappe might have had a statistically better season but in the last few matches, Neymar has set fire on the pitch. He has matured as a footballer and has adjusted his game according to the requirements of the team. He drops in between the line and draws defenders out, freeing up space in the process for his teammates to run into.
ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI
It would be a crime to leave him out, won’t it. The star man up front for the Bavarians has had a stellar season. Many fans are of the opinion that if the Ballon d’or wasn’t cancelled then the Pole would have won it, and actually they aren’t wrong. There has hardly been a match where the Polish star hasn’t hit the back of the net. His selection to this team is a no-brainer.
SERGE GNABRY
Another Premier League flop makes our team. His progression would definitely confuse the likes of Arsene Wenger and Tony Pulis. Hansi Flick has turned him into a beast. He, statistically, has had a season to remember. His consistency has been on par with the best players in the world. He will be the right winger in our team.
