Now that there are now not many games round the corner, we decided to take a glimpse at the history of the Community Shield. The Community Shield is played between the winners of the Premier League and the winners of the FA cup of the previous season and marks the first trophy of the long season that is to be played ahead.
Well if both are triumphed by a single club, the runner up in the Premier League happens to be the opposition. It is more charity oriented rather than just business as the game proceeds are distributed to the charities and community initiatives.
The history goes back to 1898 when it was first played between the professionals and the amateurs. The first official match was played between Manchester United and the Queens Park Rangers where it was known as the Sheriff of London Charity Shield.
While you may wonder that rules must remain the same, yeah they are except for a few exceptions like the teams are allowed a maximum of 6 substitutions in a match, 3 more than the usual one rather 1 more than usual keeping the pandemic in mind.
Interestingly both Arsenal and Liverpool share the same number of trophies between them-15 with Manchester United leading on 21. While Arsenal have shared the title just once in 1991 with Tottenham Liverpool have shared a record number of 5 titles each time in 1964, 1965, 1977, 1986 and 1990.
The trophy was won last year by Manchester City, Liverpool having last triumphed in 2006 while Arsenal have been fairly consistent in this and had the last laugh in 2017. While Liverpool look stronger on the paper, Arsenal always take out their best game in finals and especially in Cup competitions, the most recent one being the win versus Chelsea in the FA Cup Final. We can never rule them out as long as they have a proven, prolific goalscorer in Pierre Emerick Aubameyang. It seems we have a high scoring game on the cards.
