UCL TOTY 2019-20

The mini tournament finally ended in Lisbon with many new underdogs, exceptional performances and some heartbreaks. Here is our attempt at making a Team Of The Year. Narrowing down to 11 players was a very tough job. So, there were some omissions, players who might have made headlines, but didn't get a place in our eleven. Mention your changes or your team in the comments.

GOALKEEPER

Manuel Neuer

Just when you think he is too old for this position, your notions are questioned. His reflexes and stunning saves throughout the campaign have been exemplary which helped Bayern land their 6th title. The final against PSG, keeping a clean sheet against the likes of Neymar,Mbappe and Di Maria,WoW. At 34 years, he is going strong and doesn’t seem to slow down anytime soon.

DEFENDERS

Right Back

Joshua Kimmich

The man behind those exquisite through balls and crosses to the magnificent Lewandowski and the skilful Gnabry, he has been on a roll this season and one of the vital cogs of this Bayern setup. His ability to switch positions and perform flawlessly has left in awe of this young German.

Center Backs

Dayot Upamecano

RB Leipzig’s fairytale run in this season was majorly due to this man. Rock solid at defence with great heading and on the ball control, he is one of the most complete Center Backs with all the big clubs keeping a close eye on him and why shouldn’t they, he is just 21 years old with tons of potential.

Thiago Silva

The Brazilian center back is performing at the top level consistently through the years. Well, this one has been a special one with the PSG captain playing exceptionally throughout. His composure and bags of experience finally helped his team to where they were this season.

Left Back

Alphonso Davies

There should be no debate about the left back position. Such has been his command throughout the Champions League. Blistering pace, perfect crosses, neat dibble defines him and catching and going past him seems to be a trouble too many for his opponents.

MIDFIELDERS

Kevin De Bruyne

The most consistent and skilful midfielders of modern times, he hardly has a bad game. Be it his left or right footed shot, through balls or crosses, he just makes things work. Had the front line before him a little bit more clinical, his assists tally would have shown what he brings to his City team.

Houssem Aouar

One of the finds of the season has been Houssem Aouar. His trickery, dribbles, dangerous runs amazed us all. This Lyon team owes a major part of its success to this young Frenchmen.

Thomas Muller

Age is just a number and he proves it right every time! His inch perfect crosses, finishing just proves why he is as important as Gnabry and Lewandowski. After many average seasons, Muller has been exceptional and is back to where he belonged and this one has been a season to remember!

FORWARDS

Serge Gnabry

The Arsenal reject has been doing his job superbly day in and day out. His understanding with his fellow mates and insane ball control with moments of individual brilliance were all top notch and were vital to help Bayern land the Champions League.

Robert Lewandowski

This man has been a machine this season, scoring in every Champions League game he has been part of except the Final. A major threat when he has the ball in his feet while also possessing the same hazards to the opponents when the ball is in the air, out of nowhere, he has been at the right place at the right time which went a long way in claiming the prized asset for the 6th time.

Neymar Jr

After missing out on the last two seasons of the Champions League due to injuries,Neymar just showed this season around his worth and why PSG paid such huge bucks to go for the stylish Brazilian. Leading the team from the front in every match, he was indispensable to the team with a string of great performances which resulted in his team going so close to the club football's most coveted prize.

VAR: Boon or Bane?

Ever since its introduction, VAR has sparked controversies all around the globe. While it was believed before its introduction that it would reduce the human errors and provide the referees a second chance to rectify their mistakes, it now has left us pondering whether technology intervention was required in the first place.      The good point is that no foul committed can possibly go unnoticed but the disadvantages are far more with the most disturbing being it stops the flow of the game every now and then and this doesn’t augur well for the beautiful game as the frequent stoppages are disturbing both for the players and the audiences. By this time, we already know there have been a record number of penalties awarded in this season’s Premier League and credit goes to VAR for awarding them without much hesitation. For the first time ever we saw a team score after the final whistle. Yes, you heard that right. Manchester United’ s game against Brighton was completed...

EL CLASICO : PREVIEW

As Camp Nou gets ready to host the first Clasico of the season, both clubs in their own rebuilding phase will look to get one over their arch rivals. Both clubs have had rather inconsistent starts to the season, by their lofty standards. With the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, this fixture has somewhat lost its glory but the political reasons behind the rivalry will continue to fuel this fixture.  FC Barcelona have come from a nightmare season, not winning any trophy and conceding 8 against Bayern Munich. With renewed hope, under Dutch boss Ronald Koeman, they have started pretty poorly in La Liga, winning two of their four matches. Although it is very early in the season, Barcelona are languishing at tenth in the table. With all the behind the scenes drama, they have coped pretty well. Lionel Messi will be their star man as usual. Coutinho has done well on his return to the club. Griezmann hasn’t yet found his feet in Catalonia. All eyes would be on Gerrard Pique, who got a red ca...

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: 2020-21

It's already been two months since that famous night in Lisbon where Bayern conquered their 2nd treble equalling the record of Barcelona in the process of highest number of trebles.         Now, the group stages has some mouth watering fixtures, the most notable being PSG v/s Man U. After that embarrassing night in Paris where the French outfit lost to a young Man U team even after having a healthy lead in the first leg, PSG have come a long way and were only second to Bayern Munich last time around. PSG have a strong team and their only main concern would be their defence after their long serving captain played his last match in the UCL final. Their forward and midfield line do not have much change and will look forward to carry on the form that they displayed last time around. On the other hand United have plenty of problems from their defence to attack. Their uninspiring captain Maguire has led them down more than once with the attackers struggling ...
