Everton VS Liverpool, Merseyside Derby : Preview

It’s time for the Merseyside Derby and never before, atleast in the recent past, has this match been so highly anticipated as a top of the table clash. The last time Everton got one over their neighbours was in 2010. Liverpool are unbeaten against Everton in their last 22 meetings. At Goodison Park, 7 of their last 8 meetings have ended in draws. But, times have changed. Liverpool have just won the Premier League and at the start of the new season, Everton occupy pole position in the League table.

Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Alission is currently injured, and that is bad news for the reds. Adrian deputized well in the Super Cup last season, but after that, he has been abysmal. In the recent 7-2 drubbing at the hands of Aston Villa(Yes 7-2!!!) Adrian made such mistakes, which a Premier League keeper shouldn’t. Then, there is Joe Gomez, who was exposed in the same match. With Matip fit and Fabinho’s performance against Chelsea, we can see Gomez getting replaced by either of them. Jordan Henderson has to return in midfield. Thiago is back after suffering from COVID-19, and if he starts, he will provide some much needed control in midfield. Roberto Firmino has to find the net soon enough. He has had a few clear chances, and he will get more, he just has to find the back of the net. Sadio Mane’s return is a huge boost. Mo Salah’s recent form is encouraging too.

Everton are top of the league. A lot of the credit has to go to Carlo Anchelotti. With James Rodriguez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin firing on all cylinders, Everton have a realistic chance of winning this match. They have been good defensively and have wrecked havoc going forward. Jordan Pickford has mistakes in him and the Liverpool forwards will look to expose him. Docoure has been a great addition to this Everton side and coming from Watford, he knows a thing or two about beating Liverpool. Richalison has been good in patches and he can be a real menace down the wing.

It would be a great match and it isn’t as straightforward to call its winner this time around. Carlo Anchelotti versus Jurgen Klopp is a tasty matchup. It promises to be one hell of a game.

VAR: Boon or Bane?

Ever since its introduction, VAR has sparked controversies all around the globe. While it was believed before its introduction that it would reduce the human errors and provide the referees a second chance to rectify their mistakes, it now has left us pondering whether technology intervention was required in the first place.      The good point is that no foul committed can possibly go unnoticed but the disadvantages are far more with the most disturbing being it stops the flow of the game every now and then and this doesn’t augur well for the beautiful game as the frequent stoppages are disturbing both for the players and the audiences. By this time, we already know there have been a record number of penalties awarded in this season’s Premier League and credit goes to VAR for awarding them without much hesitation. For the first time ever we saw a team score after the final whistle. Yes, you heard that right. Manchester United’ s game against Brighton was completed...

EL CLASICO : PREVIEW

As Camp Nou gets ready to host the first Clasico of the season, both clubs in their own rebuilding phase will look to get one over their arch rivals. Both clubs have had rather inconsistent starts to the season, by their lofty standards. With the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, this fixture has somewhat lost its glory but the political reasons behind the rivalry will continue to fuel this fixture.  FC Barcelona have come from a nightmare season, not winning any trophy and conceding 8 against Bayern Munich. With renewed hope, under Dutch boss Ronald Koeman, they have started pretty poorly in La Liga, winning two of their four matches. Although it is very early in the season, Barcelona are languishing at tenth in the table. With all the behind the scenes drama, they have coped pretty well. Lionel Messi will be their star man as usual. Coutinho has done well on his return to the club. Griezmann hasn’t yet found his feet in Catalonia. All eyes would be on Gerrard Pique, who got a red ca...

Manchester City VS Arsenal : Preview

In recent times, not too often Arsenal have had the upper hand versus Pep’s City. Given City’s inconsistency early on in the season with their solitary win from 3 games coming against Wolves, City are not too high on confidence and have been a poor reflection of themselves from their previous seasons. The loss against Leicester was embarrassing with their defenders leaking out as many as 3 penalties and Pep’s emphasis on improving the defence continuously somewhat seems justified as City spent over 100m euros only on defenders this season.          Arsenal on the other hand have looked like a well oiled machine with all their new recruits, Arsenal and Gabriel fitting in the team in no time. Their only loss came against the defending champions, Liverpool. Arsenal will look to carry the momentum from their previous win against Sheffield United. What’s more encouraging for Arsenal is that apart from their club captain and prolific goalscorer being am...
